I had a terrible experience with HolidayLettings recently. I made a reservation for one of their homes listed on their site months in advance, only to become a victim of fraud.

Just a month before our travel date, the supposed "owner" contacted me and asked for money through Zelle payment, which raised suspicions. I immediately reached out to the HolidayLettings fraud department, who investigated and confirmed that the listing was fake. This left our group without accommodation for a trip that was just around the corner.

Unfortunately, the area we were visiting was in high demand, and prices had skyrocketed since our original booking. Despite the inconvenience caused, HolidayLettings offered no compensation to offset the price difference and seemed to make little effort in finding a suitable alternative accommodation that was similar to our original choice.

This experience has made me realize that TripAdvisor and its affiliated companies do very little to vet and verify the listings on their site.

The lack of oversight allows criminals to take advantage of unsuspecting customers, and it appears that HolidayLettings is unconcerned about this issue.

Based on my experience, I strongly recommend seeking other travel booking services that are more trustworthy and reputable when planning future trips in order to avoid similar situations. I cannot recommend HolidayLettings services, given the lack of accountability and oversight I encountered.

Do not book with TripAdvisor's Holiday Lettings. Renters have ZERO protection when there are problems.

Owners know you have no recourse and take full advantage, with TripAdvisor's blessing.

We booked a rental house for two weeks, and it was nothing like the photos. The house was in a state of complete disrepair. The c02/smoke detectors were going off / in an alarm state the entire time, the guest bathroom shower stopped working, doorknobs fell off doors daily, a sewage smell permeated the primary bathroom, doors and knobs were missing from closets, lightbulbs were burnt out, the keypad to unlock the only entry door was ancient and malfunctioning, the pool cleaner was broken (eventually it was removed entirely, leaving the pool unclean and unusable the entire time), the washer/dryer were broken, etc. There's a much longer list of things that were going wrong.

The rental was nothing like the photos and description on TripAdvisor's Holiday Lettings site. It was in terrible condition and very unclean. We immediately let the owners know about these problems (of which they were already aware, based on many years of poor reviews on other sites, which we didn't find until we received the physical rental address upon arrival). The owners' reply was that we should vacate.

We had already flown here, taken time off work, and prepaid for the rental entirely. No attempt or offer was made to address any issues. TripAdvisor was no help.

The owners already have your money and know you have no recourse, so they make no attempt (or even pretense) to fix anything. This site is a cash grab.

Refund for payment (Apartment not available)

I booked for an apartment in Colliers Wood which was available for our chosen dates on your website. We however got a response from the Owners saying "Sorry, NOT available for your dates, Please IGNORE the large quotation The property is". The response was now accompanied by a huge quotation of more than 10000 pounds, up from the 1400 pounds that we had booked for. And now no-one from Holiday Lettings is communicating about processing our refund yet we need the funds to pay for another place to stay. This is such an inconvenience. In future advertise properties that have conformed availability as this is such an inconvenience

I am enclosing photographs so that you can see how awful it was especially considering that we paid Euro3160.20. The photographs were totally misleading. I am attaching photographs so that you can see what it was like. The owner did transfer us to his own private apartment. A large section of it was off limits to us which was fine. However, he failed to inform us that they were doing major changes above us so we were subjected to drills, hammer noise and tapping noise for the entire 6 weeks. Outside on the only sunny bit where we could sit they dug *** right beside the table where we could sit. The duvet was disgusting. There were no hangers in the place allocated to us so had to go out and buy some. There was a problem with keys as we had the only two sets so if he wanted to come to the apartment we would have to sit in. We had no hot water for 24 hours after arrival and could not shower in the previous apartment because of the filth of the bathrooms. It was not possible to lock the doors to the patio so had to use a stool and part of the hoover to attempt to ensure our security. The DVD supplied was from the dark ages and continually froze on all of the dvds that we had brought with us to watch. We rented what we were led to believe was a beautiful apartment on the top floor with lovely views. A large for sale sign took care of that and the replacement apartment was -0 on the same level as the car park. We were totally ripped off and now have decided that I will never again rent an apartment that doesn't have at least 6 reviews. If there are no reviews then it probably is well below expected standards. I will definitely avoid HolidayLettings and Tripadvisor and anything that Luis Carvalho has a hand in. He was one of the most unreasonable people I have ever come across. When Luis Carvalho offered to book a taxi for us we accepted although we had a very good one one file. We paid Euro5 more with his driver and now he tells me that he did us a favour. I need to know what can be done about saving someone else from getting caught in this trap. The apartment is up for sale and it is obvious the owner has no intention of making it comfortable and safe for anyone. The walk-in shower was as high as my duffel bag and you stepped on to a 6 inch step and then down again to the next level in the shower. We are in our 70s and wanted a proper walk-in shower not something you could climb into. We had to climb into the bath to have a shower in Luis Carvalho's private apartment. The address of the apartment is Rua Ponta da Cruz n 35 Block 9 - 3A. The online address is Apartmento T2 em frente ao Mar in the HolidayLettings website. In the end you are not sure which one you are dealing with but they both totally ensure you have no way of contacting them to complain about the appalling circumstances as we are misled into booking an apartment that on the face of it looks beautiful. Please look at the photos on the above link. I have done everything I can to contact Holiday Lettings and Tripadvisor but it is a total waste of time. I think it is high time that they were answerable to all the holiday renters. Finally the address of Luis Carvalho apartment is Rua Velha Da Ajuda N131, Block B-1A, Monumental Palace, Funchal.

REALLY BAD site to rent for owners and renters STAY AWAY!!

Flipkey/ tripadvisor/Holiday lettings are all the same company. they were booking my property without my consent then when the dates were unavailable they were trying to charge me a 150$ cancellation fee. Customer service is so horrible and you cannot even understand them with their accents. AS a property owner i was called and harrassed on a daily basis. If i did not take a vooking they shut down my site and i lost quite a bit of bookings. Please for owners and renters do NOT ever book with this site. Renters only have 24 hours to cancel a reservation then they will chrge you a 150$ fee to cancel. so once they get your money you will be out the 150.00$ I finally had to change my checking account and go offline due to horrible harrassing calls at least 4 x a week. A SCAM PLEASE STAY AWAY

Holidaylettings worst customer service ever

As a global traveler with several telephone numbers, I have been receiving automated responses and fake bookings spamming my email from holiday lettings. Finally they suspended my account since I wrote to complain about their customer service. Holiday lettings linked with flip-key and TripAdvisor will never be able to provide a service as Airbnb who respects their high income earners and provides prompt and accurate assistance when needed. It is a classical example of a multinational company becoming to to large (holiday lettings linked with trip adviser and Flip key) and forgetting that the customer service should be their first priority.
